Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between MGP10 and MGP12 pine framing?
MGP10 and MGP12 are machine-graded pine grades under AS/NZS 1748. MGP12 has a higher stiffness modulus and bending strength than MGP10, so it spans further or supports heavier loads at the same section size. Most domestic wall framing uses MGP10, while MGP12 suits longer-span lintels, deeper joists and engineered designs. Birak stocks both grades in 70x35, 90x35, 90x45, 90x35 and 90x45 H2 treated configurations across the standard 2.4–6.0m length range.
When do I need H2 treated MGP pine framing instead of untreated?
H2 treatment provides protection against subterranean termite attack and is required by the BCA for framing in termite-risk zones across most of mainland Australia. Untreated MGP10 and MGP12 are still used in Tasmania and other low-risk areas, or where alternative termite management is in place. Birak supplies the full MGP range in TAN T H2 treated grade — 70x35, 90x35, 90x45, plus 120x35 through 290x45 wides for plates, lintels and beams in 3.6–6.0m lengths.
Does MGP pine framing comply with AS 1684?
Yes. Birak's MGP10 and MGP12 framing is stress-graded under AS/NZS 1748 and dimensioned to suit the span tables in AS 1684 Residential Timber-Framed Construction. Sections from 70x35 up to 290x45 cover wall studs, top and bottom plates, floor and ceiling joists, lintels and rafters across N1–C4 wind classifications. Each pack is supplied with mill-of-origin documentation that supports certifier sign-off.
Can I order docked-to-length MGP framing?
Yes. Birak supplies pre-docked 90x35 and 90x45 MGP10 (untreated and H2) in standard stud heights — 2.360m, 2.640m and 2.660m — to suit common ceiling heights without on-site cutting. Docked stock reduces site waste, speeds up framing crews and improves consistency for builders running multiple homes. Custom dock lengths can be quoted on commercial volumes.
Does MGP pine framing count toward my Indigenous Procurement Policy target?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on MGP framing — and the rest of our range — counts toward your IPP 4% Indigenous procurement target. We supply audit-ready procurement documentation automatically with each invoice, which simplifies reporting for Commonwealth-funded projects, head contractors and Tier 1 builders carrying Reconciliation Action Plan commitments.
