What's the difference between face mount and top mount joist hangers?

Face mount hangers are nailed or screwed to the face of the supporting beam, with the joist sitting inside the hanger stirrup — this keeps the top of the joist flush with the top of the beam. Top mount hangers hook over the top of the supporting beam, which can speed installation and locate the joist accurately at the beam top. Birak stocks both types sized for 240mm and 400mm I-joists in 58, 60, 70, 89, 97 and 99mm flange widths.

Which hanger size suits the I-joist I'm specifying?

Hanger selection follows joist depth and flange width. For 240mm-deep I-joists with 69 or 70mm flanges, use the BIH231X74 (face mount) or BITH240X74 (top mount). For 400mm-deep joists, use BIH397X60/BITH400X60 for 58mm flanges, or BIH385X99/BITH400X99 for 97mm flanges. The 240x89 hangers suit deeper-flange 240mm joists. Always cross-check hanger capacity against the engineer's load schedule before fixing.
