Frequently asked questions

What makes Merbau a popular hardwood choice?
Merbau (Intsia bijuga) is one of the most specified imported hardwoods in Australia because it delivers high density, naturally durable heartwood, dimensional stability and a distinctive red-brown grain at a price point well below most equivalent Australian eucalypts. It machines cleanly, drills predictably and accepts oils and stains well — which is why it is dominant in decking, structural posts, beams, stair treads and exterior trim across the residential and commercial market.
What is the difference between GL17 and GL13 Merbau beams?
GL17 is a higher-strength glue-laminated grade typically specified for structural beams in the 70x42 through 290x42 and 190–290x65 range, plus heavy 240–290x80. It is supplied DAR E4E in 3.6–7.2m lengths. GL13 Merbau is the pre-oiled architectural beam grade, stocked in deeper sections from 252x65 through 420x85, designed for visible exposed beams in patios and verandahs where the pre-oiled finish is part of the spec.
What Merbau trim and stair components are stocked?
Birak stocks Merbau finger-jointed trim in 18x18 quad, 30x30 scotia, 42x10 cover strip, 66x18 DAR and 42x30 DAR — all in 5.4m lengths. Solid Merbau stair treads are stocked in 240x42, 255x42 and 290x42 in 2.4m. Posts are available in 90x90 and 115x115 finger-jointed laminated GL13 DAR, with solid 140x140 and 190x190 GL13 Merbau posts for heavier structural and architectural applications.
Does Merbau through Birak count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy spend?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar of Merbau spend — DAR boards, GL17 and GL13 beams, posts, stair treads and trim — counts toward your organisation's 4% IPP target. Because Merbau is typically a substantial line on any deck or alfresco project, routing it through an Indigenous-owned supplier compounds IPP-eligible procurement quickly. Audit-ready paperwork is included automatically with every delivery.
Can Birak supply project quantities of Merbau Australia-wide?
Yes. Merbau stockists are typically state-bound and pricing varies dramatically between regional importers. Birak ships the full Merbau range — KD Select DAR, GL17 beams, GL13 oiled beams, posts and stair treads — to every state and territory. Typical lead times are 5–10 business days for stocked sizes, with larger project quantities scheduled to suit your build program under a single nationwide trading account.
