Frequently asked questions

What does A-bond mean on exterior plywood?
A-bond refers to the glue line classification under AS/NZS 2271 Plywood — Structural and Marine. A-bond is the most durable adhesive class — fully waterproof and structurally rated for prolonged moisture exposure, making it suitable for soffits, eaves, exposed external linings and weather-exposed applications. A-bond plywood does not delaminate under typical Australian climate cycling. Birak's Hoop Pine A/C exterior plywood is supplied in 6, 9, 12, 16 and 19mm thicknesses, all 2400x1200.
What does A/C face grade indicate?
A/C indicates the face veneer quality on each side of the panel — A grade on the visible face (clean, uniform, paint-ready surface) and C grade on the reverse (utility face, suitable for concealed back). A/C is the standard grade for soffits, eaves and exterior linings where one face is visible and finished while the back is hidden. For applications visible from both sides, higher-grade A/A panels can be requested.
Is Hoop Pine plywood durable enough for Australian weather?
Hoop Pine is a Queensland-grown softwood with good performance in plywood manufacturing — straight grain, light colour and consistent veneer quality. When supplied as A-bond exterior plywood, the panel withstands Australian climate cycling for soffit, eave and protected exterior applications. For prolonged direct weather exposure, marine plywood (AS/NZS 2272) provides higher veneer integrity. For external linings under cladding or facade systems, the A/C exterior range is appropriate.
Can exterior plywood be left unpainted?
Exterior A/C plywood is supplied unfinished and requires a painted, stained or sealed finish for long-term external durability. UV exposure on bare timber will cause greying and surface checking over time, even with A-bond glue line. For soffits and eaves, a primer plus topcoat system is standard — providing colour, weather protection and substantially extending service life. For protected exterior applications such as undercroft linings, finishing requirements may be reduced.
Does exterior plywood count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy spend?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on Hoop Pine A/C exterior plywood and any other product in our range counts toward your IPP 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice. For volume builders ordering exterior ply for soffits and eaves across multiple homes, switching supply to Birak meaningfully lifts Indigenous procurement contribution per project.
