Frequently asked questions
When should I use non-structural plywood instead of structural?
Non-structural plywood is the right choice for joinery, cabinetry, packaging, shopfit panels, internal linings and any application where the panel is not load-bearing. Using non-structural ply where it suits the application is more cost-effective than over-specifying structural F11. Reserve structural plywood for bracing, flooring, hoarding and engineered applications where the AS/NZS 2269 stress grade is required by the design or certifier. Birak supplies both ranges so you specify each panel to its use.
What's the difference between EziPly Lauan and EziPly BC Non-Struct?
EziPly Lauan 3mm is a thin, light Asian hardwood plywood commonly used for backings, drawer bottoms and skinning applications where weight matters. EziPly BC Non-Struct UT is a pine-based non-structural plywood available from 3.2mm through 25mm, suited to joinery, cabinetry and general panel applications. The BC face grade gives a B-grade visible face and C-grade reverse — paint-ready for finished joinery. Birak supplies both for different end-use requirements.
What are plywood handy panels and when are they useful?
Plywood handy panels are pre-cut sheets in convenient smaller sizes — 900x600, 1200x600 and 1200x900 — saving builders and DIYers from cutting full 2400x1200 sheets for small repair, packaging or carpentry work. Birak supplies handy panels in 3.2, 7, 9, 12 and 17mm thicknesses across the BC Non-Struct range. Useful for site repairs, hoarding patches, small joinery jobs and trade vans where full sheets are oversized.
Can non-structural plywood be used externally?
No — non-structural plywood is supplied with interior-grade glue line and is not rated for moisture exposure. External applications require A-bond exterior plywood (AS/NZS 2271) or marine plywood (AS/NZS 2272), both of which Birak stocks. Using non-structural plywood externally will result in delamination over time. For soffits, eaves and weather-exposed work, specify our Hoop Pine A/C exterior range. Internal joinery in dry areas is the appropriate non-structural ply application.
Does non-structural plywood count toward IPP targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on EziPly Lauan, BC Non-Struct, plywood handy panels and the rest of our non-structural range counts toward your Indigenous Procurement Policy 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice. For shopfitters, joiners and cabinetmakers on Commonwealth-funded fitouts, sourcing through Birak is a clear path to Indigenous-supplier spend.
