Frequently asked questions
What does the E13.2 grade mean on Birak's LVL?
E13.2 is the modulus of elasticity rating for the LVL — 13,200 MPa — which determines its stiffness and span capacity. It is one of the most common engineered LVL grades for residential and light commercial construction, suitable for floor beams, lintels, rim boards and headers. Birak stocks E13.2 LVL in H2-S termite protected grade across thicknesses of 36mm, 45mm, 63mm and 75mm, with depths ranging from 90mm up to 525mm.
When should I use LVL beams instead of MGP framing?
LVL beams are dimensionally stable, almost twist-free and far stronger than equivalent solid MGP sections. Use LVL where you need long clear spans, heavy point loads or consistent straightness — such as garage door lintels, opening headers above sliding doors, ridge beams and floor beams supporting upper-storey loads. MGP10 or MGP12 framing remains the cost-effective choice for studs, plates and standard joists. Birak stocks both ranges so you can specify each member to its best use.
What's the difference between Spec Chord LVL and standard E13.2 LVL?
Standard E13.2 LVL is a general-purpose engineered beam grade. Spec Chord LVL E14.5>F17 is a higher-grade product engineered specifically for use as truss chords and high-load chord members, with elevated bending strength matching F17 hardwood characteristics. Birak supplies 90x35 and 120x35 Spec Chord LVL in H2-S, alongside the full E13.2 range, so prefab truss plants and frame manufacturers can source both products on a single PO.
Are Birak's LVL beams termite protected for use in Australia?
Yes. All Birak LVL stock is supplied in H2-S grade, which provides protection against subterranean termite attack as required by the BCA for structural members in termite-risk zones across mainland Australia. Treatment is envelope-applied during manufacture under AS 1604.1 and certificates of treatment are supplied with each delivery for certifier and BCA sign-off.
Does LVL spend qualify toward IPP procurement targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on LVL beams — and any other product in our range — counts toward your Indigenous Procurement Policy 4% target. We supply audit-ready procurement documentation automatically with each invoice, which simplifies reporting for Commonwealth contracts, Tier 1 builders and head contractors with Reconciliation Action Plan commitments.
