Frequently asked questions
What loads can Spotted Gum F27 handle compared to softwood framing?
F27 is the highest commonly stocked structural grade for Australian hardwoods, indicating a characteristic bending strength of around 27 MPa — substantially higher than MGP10 or MGP12 softwood framing. Spotted Gum F27 is specified for heavily loaded posts, beams, lintels, exposed pergola rafters and architectural feature framing where strength and natural durability matter. Birak stocks F27 in 70x35 through 290x45 sections to suit a wide range of structural hardwood applications.
What is GL18 in Spotted Gum laminated posts?
GL18 is a high-strength glulam grade under AS/NZS 1328, with a characteristic bending strength of around 18 MPa — significantly stronger than the GL13 commonly used in softwood glulam beams. Birak's Spotted Gum GL18 posts are supplied dressed and oiled (DPR E4E) in 90x90, 115x115 and 135x135 sections at 2.4, 3.0 and 3.6m heights, ideal for exposed structural posts on alfrescos, verandahs and architectural builds.
Is Spotted Gum naturally durable enough for outdoor structural use?
Yes — Spotted Gum is rated Class 1 for natural in-ground durability under AS 5604, putting it among the most durable Australian hardwoods. That makes it suitable for exposed structural posts, beams and rafters without chemical treatment, provided fixings are stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised. Periodic oiling is recommended to manage tannin bleed and surface weathering on visible members. The DPR E4E finish on our GL18 posts gives a clean four-edge dressed appearance for exposed work.
How does hardwood structural compare to LVL or glulam softwood for spans?
LVL and softwood glulam achieve longer spans dollar-for-dollar than solid hardwood at the same section, because engineered products optimise material to load. Spotted Gum F27 is specified where its natural durability, hardness, density and visual grade are valued — typically exposed feature framing, heavy posts and high-strength members. Birak supplies all three (F27 hardwood, GL18 Spotted Gum, GL13/SpecLam softwood glulam, E13.2 LVL) so designers can specify the right product for each member.
Does Spotted Gum structural timber count toward IPP procurement targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on Spotted Gum F27 and GL18 — and any other product in our range — counts toward your Indigenous Procurement Policy 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice. Sourcing Australian hardwood through an Indigenous-owned supplier is a meaningful way for builders and head contractors to lift Indigenous procurement contribution on residential and architectural projects.
