Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between GL13, GL17 and SpecLam 15+ glulam grades?
The GL number is the structural grade under AS/NZS 1328, indicating the characteristic bending strength. GL13 covers most domestic and light commercial spans, GL17 (Merbau) provides higher strength suitable for heavier loads or more aggressive spans, and SpecLam 15+ is a high-performance grade tuned for engineered applications. Birak supplies GL13 Radiata DAR (straight and cambered, H2 treated), GL13 Merbau KD Select Oiled DAR, and SpecLam 15+ H2 in 240–400mm depths.
When should I specify a cambered glulam beam instead of straight?
Cambered beams are pre-curved at the factory to compensate for long-term deflection under load, so they appear flat or close to flat in service rather than sagging. Use cambered GL13 for long-span floor beams, garage lintels and exposed structural beams where visible deflection is unacceptable. Straight beams are appropriate for shorter spans or where end fixings would conflict with camber. Birak stocks both straight and cambered GL13 Radiata and SpecLam 15+ in matching depths.
Can Merbau glulam be used externally on its own?
Merbau is a naturally durable hardwood with Class 1 in-ground durability ratings, and our Merbau KD Select GL13 beams arrive oiled and DAR (dressed all round) for clean exposed-finish applications such as pergola beams, alfresco rafters and feature posts. Regular re-oiling is recommended to manage tannin bleed and weathering. For framing concealed in walls or floors, the Radiata GL13 H2 range is a more cost-effective choice.
Are Birak's laminated beams compliant with Australian Standards?
Yes. All Birak glulam beams are manufactured to AS/NZS 1328 Glued Laminated Structural Timber, with grade certificates supplied to support certifier sign-off. The Radiata GL13 and SpecLam 15+ ranges are H2 treated to AS 1604 for termite protection, and Merbau is supplied in its naturally durable form. Sections from 252x65 through 420x85 cover most domestic and light commercial span requirements.
Does laminated beam spend count toward IPP targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on GL13 Radiata, Merbau GL13, SpecLam 15+ and our other glulam products counts toward your Indigenous Procurement Policy 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is included automatically with each invoice. That makes Birak a straightforward route for Tier 1 builders and Commonwealth project teams to lift Indigenous procurement contribution on long-span timber jobs.
