Frequently asked questions

What is Metsa Kerto LVL and where is it used?
Metsa Kerto is a premium European laminated veneer lumber manufactured from Nordic spruce, known for its tight grain, exceptional straightness and high consistency between members. Kerto LVL is specified for long-span floor beams, lintels, ridge beams and engineered roof structures in residential and commercial projects, particularly where straightness and dimensional stability matter. Birak supplies Kerto LVL nationwide alongside the rest of our engineered timber range.
How does Finnjoist compare to other I-joists?
Finnjoist is Metsa's engineered I-beam, manufactured with Kerto LVL flanges and a high-density fibreboard web for superior stiffness, straightness and dimensional stability. The European manufacturing tolerance is tight, which means floor systems install square, run flat and produce minimal squeak or bounce in service. Birak supplies Finnjoist alongside our Spec Joist and Swelite I-joist ranges so builders can pick the engineered product that suits their project budget and span requirements.
Is Metsa engineered timber suitable for Australian termite zones?
Imported European LVL and I-joists are supplied with treatment specification varying by line and project requirement. For framing in Australian termite-risk zones, BCA compliance requires either H2-treated members or an alternative termite management system. Contact Birak with your project location and structural specification and we'll confirm the correct Metsa product, treatment grade and any compliance documentation needed for certifier sign-off.
Why source Metsa through Birak rather than direct?
Birak ships Metsa products nationwide on consolidated POs with the rest of your timber package — engineered beams, I-joists, MGP framing, structural plywood and connectors on a single delivery. Most state-bound competitors require interstate buyers to coordinate freight separately, while direct importers carry only the imported line. Birak provides one supplier, one invoice, one delivery and one set of audit-ready procurement paperwork.
Does Metsa product spend count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on Metsa Kerto LVL, Finnjoist and any other product in our range counts toward your IPP 4% Indigenous procurement target — regardless of where the underlying product is manufactured. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice, so Commonwealth contractors and Tier 1 builders can confidently include premium imported engineered timber in their IPP-eligible spend.
