Frequently asked questions
Which hardwood species does Birak stock for decking?
Birak supplies five premium decking species: West Australian Jarrah for its deep red tones and Class 1 durability; Kapur for clean grain and proven outdoor performance; Merbau as the most specified imported hardwood option; NSW Spotted Gum for hard-wearing, light-toned Australian hardwood decking; and Red Ironbark, one of the most durable and dense Australian eucalypts. White Cypress reed-deck is also available for naturally termite-resistant Australian-grown decking.
What board widths are available across the hardwood range?
Birak stocks decking in two main widths. The 70x19 and 86x19 narrow boards suit traditional verandahs and tighter joist spacings, while 90x19 and 135x19 boards are common for modern decks where a wider, flatter face is wanted. Kapur is also stocked in 140x25 for heavier-traffic applications. Merbau finger-jointed boards in 90x19 and 140x19 are available in 5.4 and 5.7m lengths to minimise end joints across larger decks.
How do I compare Merbau, Spotted Gum and Jarrah decking?
Merbau is the most cost-effective premium hardwood — stable, dense and red-brown, but tannin bleed must be managed at install. Spotted Gum is harder, lighter in tone with strong grain figure, and is preferred where designers want an Australian eucalypt look. Jarrah is the iconic deep-red Western Australian hardwood with Class 1 in-ground durability. All three are dense, naturally durable hardwoods stocked Kiln Dried Select grade through Birak.
Is Birak's hardwood decking IPP compliant for government projects?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so spend on Jarrah, Kapur, Merbau, Spotted Gum, Red Ironbark and White Cypress decking flows through to your 4% Indigenous Procurement Policy target. Procurement officers receive audit-ready paperwork automatically with every delivery, which is essential for state government, defence and Tier-1 head contractor projects where IPP evidence is part of contract reporting.
Can Birak ship hardwood decking interstate?
Yes — and this is unusual in the hardwood decking market, which is dominated by state-bound suppliers. Birak ships the full Jarrah, Kapur, Merbau, Spotted Gum, Red Ironbark and White Cypress range nationwide, with typical lead times of 5–10 business days for stock items. Larger project quantities and mixed-species orders can be coordinated under one purchase order, removing the need to open multiple regional supplier accounts for a single deck specification.
