Frequently asked questions
What is Prolam glulam timber?
Prolam is a high-quality glued laminated timber range engineered for residential and commercial structural applications. Beams are manufactured by laminating stress-graded timber boards with structural adhesive under controlled pressure, producing beams that are stronger, straighter and more dimensionally stable than equivalent solid sawn sections. Birak supplies Prolam glulam beams nationwide alongside our wider engineered timber range, including GL13 Radiata, Merbau GL13 and SpecLam 15+.
When should I specify Prolam over solid timber beams?
Glulam beams like Prolam achieve longer clear spans, handle higher point loads and remain straighter in service than equivalent-section solid timber. Specify Prolam for long-span floor beams, garage door lintels, ridge beams, exposed feature beams and any application where visible deflection or twist is unacceptable. For shorter spans and standard framing, MGP10 or MGP12 remains the cost-effective choice. Birak stocks both engineered and solid framing so designers can specify each member to its best use.
Are Prolam beams compliant with Australian Standards?
Yes. Glulam beams supplied through Birak are manufactured to AS/NZS 1328 Glued Laminated Structural Timber, with grade certificates and engineering data supplied to support certifier sign-off. Treatment grades (H2, H3) and structural grades (GL13, GL17, GL18) vary by section — contact Birak with your engineer's specification and project location for confirmation of the correct Prolam product and supporting documentation.
Can Prolam be used externally with exposure to weather?
Glulam suitability for external exposure depends on treatment grade. H3-treated glulam suits above-ground exterior use such as pergola beams and exposed verandah members. Naturally durable hardwood glulam (Merbau GL13, Spotted Gum GL18) is also suitable for exposed external work. For internal framing in termite-risk zones, H2-treated glulam is the standard. Birak supplies all grades and can confirm the right Prolam specification for your application.
Does Prolam spend count toward IPP procurement targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on Prolam glulam beams and the rest of our range counts toward your Indigenous Procurement Policy 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice — useful for Tier 1 builders, Commonwealth-funded projects and head contractors with Reconciliation Action Plan commitments who need Indigenous-supplier spend on engineered structural timber.
