Frequently asked questions

When should I use particleboard flooring vs plywood flooring?
Particleboard T+G flooring (Green Tongue, Beige Tongue, Brown Tongue, Termi-floor) is the most cost-effective structural floor sheeting in Australia, designed specifically for fixing to floor joists with tongue-and-groove edges for fast layout. Plywood T+G F11 is stiffer and more dimensionally stable, often preferred for premium floors, taller buildings or floors with heavy concentrated loads. For most volume residential construction, particleboard flooring remains the standard choice. Birak stocks both ranges.
What does the tongue colour signal — Green, Beige, Brown?
Tongue colour is the manufacturer's grade and thickness identifier for particleboard structural flooring under AS/NZS 1860. Green Tongue is typically 19mm flooring at 450mm joist centres for general residential. Beige Tongue is 22mm flooring suited to 600mm joist centres or higher loads. Brown Tongue at 25mm is the heaviest standard residential flooring grade. Termi-floor variants add termite-resistant treatment. Birak stocks all colours in 3600x800 and 3600x900 panels.
What is Termi-floor particleboard?
Termi-floor is particleboard structural flooring manufactured with termite-resistant treatment, providing protection against subterranean termite attack as part of an integrated termite management system. Termi-floor is required by the BCA in many termite-risk zones across mainland Australia. Birak supplies Termi-floor in 19mm Green Tongue (3600x800 and 3600x900) and 22mm Beige Tongue, alongside the standard particleboard flooring range for low-risk areas or alternative termite management systems.
Can melamine shelving be used for cabinet carcassing?
Yes. The 16mm Decor Melamine Shelving range is pre-laminated with a wipe-clean melamine surface, suited to wardrobe shelving, pantry shelving, cupboard carcassing and any application where a finished surface saves a separate laminating step. Birak stocks pre-cut shelving in 1200/1800/2400 lengths at 295/445/595mm widths, plus full 2400x1200 sheets for custom cuts. The HMR variant suits damp-area carcassing.
Does particleboard count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on particleboard flooring, Termi-floor, standard particleboard and melamine shelving counts toward your IPP 4% target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice. Volume residential builders typically use 30+ sheets of T+G particleboard flooring per home — switching that supply to Birak materially lifts Indigenous procurement contribution across each project.
