Frequently asked questions

What is Spec Frame LVL and how is it different from standard LVL?
Spec Frame LVL is a stud-grade LVL engineered specifically for wall framing — straight, dimensionally stable and tuned to standard stud heights and centres. Standard E13.2 LVL is optimised for long-span beams and lintels, while Spec Frame is optimised for vertical stud loading and wall continuity. Birak stocks Spec Frame 10.0 and 12.1 in 70x35, 90x35, 70x45, 90x45 plus 140x45 and 190x45 framing wides, all H2-S termite protected.
When should I use Spec Frame LVL instead of MGP framing?
Spec Frame LVL is specified where straightness, twist resistance and dimensional stability matter — typically tall walls (above 2.7m), exposed framing, party walls and feature walls where MGP softwood may bow or twist as it dries. The 8.4m maximum length means single-piece studs in two-storey construction with no horizontal joints. For standard 2.4–2.7m residential walls in standard locations, MGP10 framing remains a cost-effective choice — Birak stocks both.
What are the standard Spec Frame stud lengths Birak supplies?
Birak supplies Spec Frame 10.0 LVL in stud lengths from 2.66m and 2.7m through to 8.4m, covering everything from standard 2.4m residential ceilings up to two-storey continuous studs. The 70x35 and 70x45 sizes suit non-load-bearing internal walls and most external wall framing; 90x35 and 90x45 suit load-bearing walls; 140x45 and 190x45 framing wides suit lintels and plates. Spec Frame 12.1 in 90x35 covers 4.8–6.0m lengths.
Is Spec Frame LVL compliant with Australian Standards?
Yes. Spec Frame LVL is engineered and graded under AS/NZS 4357 (Structural Laminated Veneer Lumber), with H2-S treatment to AS 1604.1 for termite protection. Stud capacity is published in manufacturer design data for use under AS 1684 framing. Birak supplies Spec Frame nationwide with treatment certificates and manufacturer documentation included automatically — supporting certifier sign-off for residential and light commercial projects in any Australian state or territory.
Does Spec Frame spend count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on Spec Frame LVL, Spec Joist, SpecLam and the rest of our range counts toward your IPP 4% Indigenous procurement target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is supplied automatically with each invoice. For frame and truss manufacturers running multiple homes, switching framing supply to Birak is a high-impact way to lift Indigenous procurement contribution on commercial volumes.
