Frequently asked questions
How does Cutek work compared to a surface coating?
Most decking finishes form a film on top of the timber, which eventually cracks, peels and traps moisture underneath. Cutek is a deeply penetrating oil that drives into the timber rather than sitting on the surface, dimensionally stabilising the boards from within. This minimises warping, cupping, splitting and end-grain checking on dense hardwoods like Merbau, Spotted Gum and Jarrah, and dramatically reduces the maintenance cycle compared to film-forming products.
Which timbers should be finished with Cutek?
Cutek is well suited to dense hardwood decking, exterior cladding, screening, fences and any timber prone to seasonal movement and surface checking. It is commonly applied to Merbau, Kapur, Jarrah, Spotted Gum and Red Ironbark decks, as well as Eucalypt cladding and natural-finish exterior architectural pine. It can also be used on screening battens and posts where surface films would be impractical to maintain.
Do I need to recoat Cutek as often as a film finish?
Recoat cycles depend on exposure, but because Cutek penetrates rather than building a surface film, maintenance is typically a clean and a refresh coat rather than the strip-and-recoat cycle that surface coatings demand. There is no peeling or flaking to manage, and patch repairs blend into the existing finish. Always follow the current Cutek application and maintenance instructions for the substrate and exposure level you are working with.
Does Cutek purchased through Birak count toward IPP targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so Cutek timber protection products purchased through us count toward your 4% Indigenous Procurement Policy target alongside the decking and cladding being protected. Bundling timber and finishes on a single Indigenous-supplier purchase order is one of the cleanest ways to grow IPP-eligible spend without changing your specification, and audit-ready paperwork is provided automatically with every delivery.
Can Birak supply Cutek with the timber it protects?
Yes. Because Birak supplies decking, cladding and structural hardwood Australia-wide, Cutek can be added to the same purchase order as the timber it is intended to protect — Merbau decking, Eucalypt cladding, Spotted Gum and Jarrah included. Typical lead times are 5–10 business days, and bundling oil and timber removes the risk of installing decks that sit unprotected on site while a separate finish order is being chased.
