Frequently asked questions

How does OSB bracing comply with AS 1684 wind region requirements?
AS 1684 sets racking force requirements for wall and roof bracing based on wind classification (N1–C4). OSB bracing sheets achieve published bracing capacity per metre when fixed at specified nail spacings — these capacities are tabulated in the manufacturer's design data and used to size bracing wall lengths against the engineer's calculated wind force. Birak stocks 6mm OSB Brace in 2440x900, 2745x900, 2440x1200, 2745x1200 and 3050x1200 to suit common stud spacing.
When should I specify H2-treated OSB Brace instead of standard?
H2 treatment provides protection against subterranean termite attack and is required by the BCA for structural sheathing in termite-risk zones across most of mainland Australia. Standard untreated OSB Brace is suitable in low-risk areas such as Tasmania, or behind a fully sealed termite management system. Birak stocks both — standard OSB Brace in 2440x900, 2745x900, 2440x1200 and 2745x1200, and H2-treated in the same sizes plus 3050x900 and 3050x1200 for taller wall heights.
OSB Brace vs Bracing Plywood — which should I use?
OSB and structural plywood bracing both meet AS 1684 racking requirements when fixed correctly, and design data from manufacturers gives equivalent bracing capacities for typical wall configurations. Plywood is often preferred where edge nailing or screw retention matters more, while OSB is typically the cost-effective choice for residential framing. Birak stocks both — 6mm OSB Brace and Pine Brace Ply F8 in 7mm — so frame manufacturers and builders can pick the most efficient solution per project.
What sheet sizes suit standard stud heights?
The 2440 and 2745 OSB Brace sheets cover the two most common stud heights in Australian residential framing — 2440 suits 2.4m ceilings and 2745 suits 2.7m ceilings (the BCA-preferred minimum for new builds). The 3050mm size allows for raised ceilings up to 3.0m without horizontal joints. Sheets at 1200mm width suit 600mm stud centres (two-stud spacing); 900mm width suits 450mm centres or feature offset framing.
Does OSB Brace count toward Indigenous Procurement Policy targets?
Yes. Birak is Supply Nation Registered, so every dollar spent on OSB Brace and the rest of our bracing range counts toward your IPP 4% Indigenous procurement target. Audit-ready procurement documentation is included automatically with each invoice — useful for Tier 1 builders and Commonwealth-funded projects where bracing sheet volumes can run into hundreds of sheets per home and meaningfully lift IPP-eligible spend.
