Plywood Terminology

Marine Plywood

Premium plywood made to AS/NZS 2272 with Type A bond and high-grade veneers from approved species, designed for boatbuilding and severe wet exposure.

A specialised plywood manufactured to AS/NZS 2272 using high-quality veneers from species listed in the standard, bonded with Type A phenol-formaldehyde resin. Allowable veneer defects are tighter than for structural plywood, producing fewer voids in inner plies and a smoother face. Marine plywood is used for boat hulls, internal cabinetry on vessels, and architectural applications subject to extreme wetting. The standard does not assign a stress grade; if structural performance is also required, the panel must additionally meet AS/NZS 2269. Marine plywood is not naturally durable against fungal decay, so where decay hazard exists the product should be treated. For buyers, the marine stamp confirms compliance; the price premium reflects veneer quality and tighter tolerances rather than higher engineering strength.
