Bushfire (BAL)

BAL-29

Bushfire Attack Level for sites with predicted radiant heat flux up to 29 kW/m squared, where ember attack and significant radiant heat both threaten the building.

Under AS 3959, BAL-29 applies to sites with predicted radiant heat flux above 19 and up to 29 kW/m squared. Construction requirements are substantially more demanding: external walls, windows, doors, and decks must use bushfire-resisting timber species, fibre-cement, masonry, or other complying systems. External glazing typically requires bushfire-resistant frames and grade A safety glass with toughened or screened protection. Roof penetrations must be sealed and gutters protected. Decking species are limited to those listed in AS 3959 Appendix F, or non-combustible alternatives. For buyers, BAL-29 specification often dictates the choice of cladding and decking long before site delivery. Confirm BAL on the certified plans and order matching window units, doors, and decking together to avoid clashes.
