AS/NZS 1748
Joint Australian and New Zealand Standard for the mechanical stress grading of timber, underpinning the MGP grade system used in Australian framing.
Timber - Mechanically stress-graded for structural purposes. The standard sets out the requirements for grading machinery, operator training, output marking, and quality control for sawmills producing stress-graded structural timber. It is the basis of the MGP10, MGP12, and MGP15 grades used throughout Australian framing. Output is marked with grade, producer ID, and sometimes treatment, allowing engineers and certifiers to verify the timber meets the design grade. The standard works alongside AS 1720.1 for design values, AS 1684 for residential framing, and AS/NZS 1604 for treatment. For buyers, the practical implication is simple: only timber stamped to AS/NZS 1748 by a certified mill should be used as MGP-grade structural framing. Reject unmarked or illegible product.
